How To Upload Files To AOL

  • Enter the keyword 'My Ftp Space' in the key word box
  • On the menu that appears, select 'See my FTP Place'
  • You will now be viewing your AOL Directory
  • Choose 'Upload'
  • The remote filename menu will appear
  • Enter a filename for the file you are using
Ensure it is either a .jpg or .gif file for images
Ensure it is either a .mid or .midi for sounds
Ensure the binary box is checked for programs and graphics
  • Click on 'Continue'
  • You will see the 'Select File' and 'Send' menu
  • Click on 'Select' and then in the menu, select the drive or location
(example: My Documents) and the file you want to send
  • Click on the file you want to send, then click 'Open'

  • File name will appear in the file window
(Ensure it has the .jpg or .gif extension for images or .mid or .midi for sounds)
  • Now select 'Send'
  • File will load to your directory after which you will get the message 'File done'
  • Check the directory and look for the new file
  • The URL to that file will now be http://members.aol.com/your username/filename.jpg
  • Remember: URLs are case sensitive.
You must enter the filename in your form the same way you uploaded it.
Try to use all lowercase letters in the URL, including filename and the extension
  • Your images must remain on the server for the duration of your auction or your pictures won't show

Thanks To Dan (Wooduno) for this tutorial.

Curing AOL/CS Fuzzy Pic Syndrome

If you are on AOL/CS (CompuServe) and experiencing fuzzy pic syndrome, read on:

If your pictures looked good when you took them, but look blurry when you view them on the web, you may need to reset your AOL graphics settings. Here's how to do that:

Settings for Graphics in AOL 4.0 and 5.0:

  • Click the "My AOL" icon.
  • Go to "Preferences."
  • Click the "WWW" button.
  • In the dialog box that opens, click the Web Graphics tab.
  • Uncheck the "Use compressed graphics" box.
  • Clear your AOL browser's cache:
    Click "My AOL."
    Click "Preferences."
    Click "Advanced."
    Purge the cache.
  • Close your AOL browser.
  • Disconnect from AOL.
When you log in to AOL again, AOL's compression function will be turned off.

Settings for Graphics in AOL 6.0:

  • Click the "Settings" button on the icon bar.
  • Click "Preferences."
  • Click "Internet Properties."
  • Click the Web Graphics tab.
  • Select "Never Compress Graphics."
  • Click "OK."

Settings for Graphics in AOL 7.0 and 8.0:

  • Click the "Settings" button on the icon bar.
  • Click "Preferences."
  • On the left-hand column of the screen that appears, select "Internet Properties."
  • Click the "Web Graphics" option.
  • Select "Never Compress Graphics."
  • Click "OK."
  • Log out of AOL.
  • When you log in to AOL again, AOL's compression function will be turned off.

For the Mac folks out there, go to "My AOL" on the tool bar, then choose "Preferences", then the "WWW" option, then un-select "Use compressed images"

Why are my files downloading with an .art file extension?

AOL likes to compress the images you download with its browser and include an .art extension onto their file names. Unfortunately, most applications probably won't recognize this extension and won't be able to open these images. Here are a few solutions:

Solution #1: Use a different browser
While you're on AOL, launch a different browser and download to your heart's content.

Solution #2: Disable AOL's image compression function (see instructions above).

Solution #3: Save the images as .bmp files, open them in your graphic editor and convert them to .jpg files.

Special thanks to Roxy M. Flanagan for providing much of the information above.
